Q: What do I need before I can start playing on ChessCube?


REGISTRATION:

Q: How do I register on ChessCube?
    1. Go to http://www.chesscube.com/play/app/
    2. Click on "Register" button
    3. Enter your preferred username and your email address
    4. Enter and re-enter your password
    5. Click on Accept

Q: Why do I get an error message when trying to register?
    1. “Login error:This username already exists”
    2. Try registering with a different username – the username you chose is already in use and cannot be registered again
    3. “Login error: A user with that email address is already registered”
    4. Try using a different email address to register – the one you provided already has a username associated to it
    5. “Login error: The username must start with a letter and can only contain letters, numbers and underscores (_)”
    6. Try using a different username – remove all characters from your username that is not letters / numbers /underscores, and make sure your username starts with a letter
    7. “Register: Make the emails match”
    8. Make sure the first email address you provided matches the one given in the “confirm email address” space

LOGGING IN:

Q: How do I log into ChessCube?

Q: How do I make ChessCube remember my password
    Tick the box that says "remember me" next to it

Q: Why do I get an error message when trying to log in?
  • “Login error: Incorrect username or password”
    1. Make sure you are entering the correct username
    2. Try entering your password again – make sure that your capslock in not on
    3. If it still does not work, click on the “forgot password” link (or go to http://www.chesscube.com/register/reset-password)
    4. Enter your username and email address used in registration, then click on reset - An email will be sent to your email address with your new password

Q: Why do I get an error message when trying to reset my password?

WHAT TO DO AFTER LOGGING IN FOR THE FIRST TIME:

Q: What do I do with the “compose your profile” box?
  • If I want to put information onto my profile
    1. Optional: Click on “upload”. Browse for an avatar (profile picture), select it and click“open”.
    2. Select the country you live in from the “living in” drop down list. This will open that room so you can chat to people from your area
    3. Select your gender
    4. Select your date of birth (Day/Month/Year)
    5. Click on save

  • If I do not want to put more information on my profile
    1. Click on the x in the top right corner of the “compose your profile” box

Q: What do I do with the “add friends” box?
  • If I want to invite friends to join ChessCube:
    1. enter your friends email in the “Friends email” text box
    2. send an optional message to your friend(s)
    3. click “Invite friends” – your friends will then receive an email inviting them to join ChessCube
4. Each friend that joins through you will receive 50cubits, as well as you.

  • If I have a gmail account and want to invite friends from its contacts:
    1. Click on the gmail button
    2. Enter your gmail username and password
    3. Select who you want to invite, and click on the”add persons” button
    4. Click on “invite friends”

  • If I don’t want to invite friends to join ChessCube:
    click on “skip” or click on the x in the top right corner of the "add friends" box


CHANGING MY PROFILE DETAILS:

Q: How do I view my profile?

Q: How do I change my username?
You cannot change your username once you are registered. If you want a different username you will need to re-register.

Q: How do I change my email details?
    1. View your profile
    2. Click on “edit profile” on your profile page
    3. Click on the “my account” tab
    4. Click on “change” next to the email section
    5. Enter your correct email details, then click on save

Q: How do I change my password?
    1. View your profile
    2. Click on “edit profile” on your profile page
    3. Click on the “my account” tab
    4. Click on “change” next to password

Q: How do I change my personal information?
    1. View your profile
    2. Click on “edit profile” on your profile page
    3. Click on the “my profile” tab
    4. Change the information you want to change, then click on “Apply”

Q: How do I change my avatar?
    1. View your profile
    2. Click on “edit profile” on your profile page
    3. Click on the “my profile” tab
    4. Click on “upload new avatar” below your current avatar
    5. Browse your system for the desired picture, then click on open
    6. Once the picture is uploaded, and the new picture is displayed, click on “Apply”

Q: How do I set what information users can see about me?
    1. View your profile
    2. Click on “edit profile” on your profile page
    3. Click on the “privacy settings” tab
    4. Select the options you prefer, then click on “apply”

Q: Why must I validate my email address?
    1. If you do not validate your email address you are limited to 5 games
    2. You cannot chat with other users / in the rooms if it is not validated


PLAYING AND WATCHING

THINGS TO DO BEFORE STARTING TO PLAY:

Q: How do I access my playing settings?
    1. click on your avatar in the bottom toolbar panel
    then click on -> “Settings”
    2. Make sure you're on the environment tab, you will find your "playing" settings below

Q: How do I change my colour preference?
    In your "playing settings", select your preferred colour from the drop-down list
    Any: Colour will be set to “any” when you challenge or seek
    White: Your colour will be automatically be set to “white” when you challenge or seek
    Black: Your colour will automatically be set to “black” when you challenge or seek

Q: How do I change my sound settings?
  • In your "settings", select your sound preferences
    On: All ChessCube sounds will be turned on
    Off: All ChessCube sounds will be turned off
    Only for playing: All ChessCube sounds will be turned on while you are playing
    Only for viewing: All ChessCube sounds will be turned on while you are watching
    games

Q: How can I promote my pawns automatically?
  • In your "playing settings", turn “automatic promotion” ON/OFF.
    On: choose from the drop-down list (with “Q” Queen/”B” Bishop/”N” Knight/”R” Rook) which piece your pawns should automatically be promoted to
    Off: you will have to choose which piece you want your pawn to promote to once it reaches the opposite rank in a game

Q: How can I turn chat off in all my games?
  • In your "playing settings", turn “mute spectators” ON/OFF
    On: Allows chat from spectators during games
    Off: Hides chat from spectators during games

Q: How can I stop my opponent from requesting takebacks?
  • In your "playing settings", turn “allow takeback” ON/OFF.
    On: Opponents will be able to request to take a move back
    Off: Opponents will not be able to request to take a move back


Q: How can I queue friend notifications?
  • In your "playing settings", turn “queue friend notifications” ON/OFF
    On: Friend notifications will only be queued during games and will only show once you have finished your game
    Off: Friend notifications will not be queued

Q: How do I access my interface settings?
    1. click on your avatar in the bottom toolbar panel and select "settings"
    2. Under the "environment" tab you will see the “interface settings”

Q: How can I change my background?
    Click on your "inventory" and select --> Backgrounds
    you will find your "inventory" on your avatar in the bottom toolbar panel "an open box" icon

Q: How can I view / hide the Home tab?
  • In your "interface settings", select “on / off” or click on the “quick view” link next to “Show home page”
    On: Opens the home tab whenever you log on
    Off: Does not open the home tab when you log on
    Quick view: Opens the home tab once-off

Q: How can I switch the board coordinates on/off?
  • In your "interface settings", select “on / off” next to “Board coordinates”
    On: Displays the board coordinates (row numbers and column letters) around the board
    Off: Hides the board coordinates

Q: How can I switch move animation on/off?
  • In your "interface settings", select “on / off” next to “Move animation”
    On: Shows the piece moving from the one square to the other
    Off: The moved piece will disappear from the starting square and reappear on the square it is moved to

Q: How can I change the chess pieces?
    Click on your "inventory" and select "chess sets"

Q: How can I make the board size bigger / smaller?
    make sure you click on the "toggle mini view" arrow to hide the bottom toolbar panel before playing a game, you can find the "toggle mini view" at the bottom far right

Q: How can I change the colours of the squares on the board?
    In your "interface settings", you will find board squares select "default" if you would like the default board square colors otherwise choose your preferred board color

Q: How can I put ChessCube in fullscreen mode for watching and playing?
    1. Click on the fullscreen icon in the bottom right corner (near the toggle mini view) of the chesscube screen

FINDING / STARTING A GAME ON CHESSCUBE:

Q: How do I set up my game preferences?

  • Note: Your game preferences are simply an indication of the type of game you prefer.
    1. click on the board icon “play” tab (on the bottom right; right near your avatar)
    2. select game type (Standard/Chess960/Any)
    Standard: If you want to play standard (normal) chess
    Chess960: If you want to play chess 960 (where pieces are set up in different starting positions)
    Any: If you want to play either standard or 960 chess
    3. select your preferred time control from the drop-down list
    4. tick / untick the “rated” box
    Ticked: If you want the game to affect your rating
    Unticked: If you don’t want the game to affect your rating
    5. select your preferred rating range by clicking on the ^ button and drag to the left and right on the scale to set your rating range
    Left scale: Sets the minimum of your preferred rating range – can be between 500 below your current rating and 0 below your current rating
    Right scale: Sets the maximum of your preferred rating range – can be between 500 above your current rating and 0 above your current rating

Q: How do I make myself available for a game so others can challenge me?
  • set your game preferences as described in “Q: How do I set up my game preferences?”
    1. Make yourself available by either clicking on the “seek” button in the “play” tab or
    2. Click on “seek” from the “home” tab or
    3. Click on the bulb in the bottom right corner found top left of your avatar
    Green: users could challenge you (you are currently seeking)
    Grey: you are currently not seeking, users cannot challenge, exceptions made to "your buddies"

    Wait for a challenge invite - once you receive one, check the invitation details and either:
    Accept: Click on the accept button to start the game
    Decline: Click on the decline button if you do not want to play against that user

Q: How can I challenge others to a game?
  • Challenging users that match / partially match your preferences:
    1. set your game preferences as described in “Q: How do I set up my game preferences?”
    2. Click on “seek” in the “play” tab
    3. Choose a user from the seek results list/graph to challenge and click on his/her name (if on list)/click on circle or triangle icons shown (if on graph)

    Q: How can I challenge one of my friends to a game?

      Note: This option will only work if the person accepted your friend request and is not offline or away
      1. Click on the avatar of your buddy shown in the bottom panel
      2. Click on the challenge button next to that user's player card
      3. Alternatively, click on the challenge button below the user’s player card on the right of a private chat screen
      4. Edit the game invite if necessary and either send or cancel the invite

    Q: How do I allow ChessCube to automatically pair me up with an opponent?
      set your game preferences as described in “Q: How do I set up my game preferences?”
      Make sure the “Manual accept” box is unchecked - possible opponents who match your preferences will then automatically be challenged.

    PLAYING A GAME:

    Q: How do I make my move on the board?
      click on the piece you want to move, and drag it to the square you want to move it to

    Q: Where can I see how much time I have left?
      Your time is displayed on the top,, right above your name.

    Q: Where can I see the scores when I am playing a lot of consecutive games?
      Your score for the series of games is displayed below your name, next to your rating.

    Q: What do the bar with the pieces below our names in the game mean?
      This shows the piece difference on the board
      Pieces displayed below your name is pieces you have remaining that your opponent has already lost

    Q: How can I castle?
      Move your king to the square it would be after castling
      The rook will move on it’s own – do not try to move it when you want to castle

    Q: How can I view all the game’s moves?
      The moves are listed in the “game” tab on the right of the playing screen.

    Q: How can I go back to a previous move in the game?
      1. Click on one of the moves in the “game” tab on the right
      2. Click on the last move to get back to the current position
      The move highlighted in blue on the “game” tab is the move you are currently viewing on the board – make sure this is the last move of your opponent or you will not be able to move!

    Q: How can I flip the board?
      Click on the arrows icon in the "game" tab below your displayed names


    Q: How can I request a takeback in the game?
      1. Click on the takeback button near the flip board icon below your displayed names
      2. If your opponent accepts, the move will be taken back and you will be able to move again
      3. If your opponent does not accept, you will have to continue without taking back the move
      4. If the takeback button is grayed out, your opponent does not allow takeback requests

    Q: How can I request to abort the game?
      Abort icon is only eligible within the first two moves, after the first two moves have been done the icon becomes greyed out; you can find the abort icon near the flip board and takeback request icon

    Q: How can I ask for a draw in the game?
      1. Click on the draw button icon to the right of the chess board and near the other icons (flip board, take back request, abort option)
      2. If your opponent accepts, the game will be drawn
      3. If your opponent does not accept, you will have to continue the game
      4. If the draw button is grayed out (disabled), you cannot ask for a draw (this happens if you asked for too many draws)
      5. If the draw button is blue, you can claim a draw (your opponent does not have to accept)

    Q: I accidently accepted a game that does not suite me – how can I get out of it?
      Simply close the game without moving (even if your opponent has played 1 move); you will not lose rating

    Q: My opponent does not want to move! What can I do?
      If neither of you have played their second move, you can close the game or click on abort; you will not lose rating
      If either player has played their second move, you will have to wait until your opponent’s time expires or he/she decides to play
      You are allowed to have more than 1 game open at a time – feel free to start another game while you wait for your opponent’s time to expire

    Q: How can I report a bug in the game / report a problem?
      1. Click on the “report abuse” link in the bottom left corner of the game tab
      2. Complete the report form, and click on send – we will then contact you with advice or more information if needed

    Q: How can I save the pgn of a game I just completed?
      Click on the “copy game to clipboard” icon in the top of the “game” tab on the game screen (icon looks like a floppy disk)
      In a text program (such as notepad or word), select paste (ctrl + v) – the pgn of the game will then be pasted on the page, and you can save it on your pc

    Q: How can I email a game I just played to a friend / myself?
      1. Click on the “share this game with your friends” in the top of the game screen (envelope like icon)
      2. enter your/your friends email address(es) in space provided
      3. alternatively (if you have a gmail account), click “import from Email account” -> enter your gmail username and password details -> click load addresses”-> select who you want to send the game to
      4. enter a personal message (if you want)
      5. click on send

    Q: How can I close a game once its done?
      Click on the x in the corner of the game’s tab (the tab of your active game screen will be highlighted)

    Q: What positions do ChessCube draw automatically?

    WATCHING GAMES:

    Q: How can I join a game to spectate?
    • From the “watch” tab:
      1. Click on the “watch” tab on the left of the screen (blue-green tab with board and binoculars)
      2. Select if you want view a game from “top 10 games” or “my buddies’ games” at the top of the watch tab
      3. Scroll to the game you want to watch, and click on it to join
    • From the live games in a room:
      1. Click on the “live games” tab in the top right corner of the chatroom (above the people list)
      2. Scroll to the game you want to watch, and click on it to join
    • If I want to join the game of a specific user in the room:
      1. Click on the “people” tab in the top right corner of the chatroom (above the people list)
      2. Scroll to the user whose game you want to watch
      3. Click on the spectate icon next to the name (icon with binoculars) then select the game which of his/her current games you want to view

    Q: How can I see analysis of the game I am watching? [premium only]
      While watching a game, click on the “insight” tab above the game chat / moves on the right
      Select whether you want to show best moves on board (best moves are indicated with arrows)

    Q: What does the “xxx is ignoring spectators” message mean?
      This means the player cannot see messages from his/her opponent or spectators until the game is completed

    Q: How can I see who is spectating the game with me?
      Click on the spectators tab above the game chat / moves screen on the right

    Q: How can I go back to a previous move in the game?
      1. Click on one of the moves in the “game” tab on the right
      2. Click on the last move to get back to the current position
      3. The move highlighted in blue on the “game” tab is the move you are currently viewing on the board – make sure this is the last move if you want to follow the game as the players make their moves

    Q: How can I flip the board?
      Click on the arrows icon above the top right corner of the board

    Q: How can I save the pgn of a game I am viewing?
      Click on the “copy pgn to clipboard” icon in the top right corner of the “game” tab on the game screen

      4. enter a personal message (if you want)
      5. click on send

    CHATTING IN PUBLIC ROOMS:

    Q: How can I join a room to chat in?
      Click on “chat rooms” tab on the bottom left of the interface, just near the play tab icon

    Q: How can I join a room automatically upon login?
      1. Click on your avatar, your player card will appear and choose -> settings
      2. click “Community” tab -> select which rooms you want to join on login by putting a tick in the boxes provided.
      3. click on apply; you will join these room next time you log in

    Q: How can I leave a room?
      Click on Room’s tab -> click the “X” on the tab

    Q: How do I send a chat message in a room?
      When in room -> enter your message in the provided white text writing area
      click “send” to send or enter key to send message.

    Q: How do I see which users are in the room?
      1. Click “People” tab on the right of interface, next to “Live Games”. A list will be made visible on the right showing which users are in the room.
      2. Users with a blue dot next to their names are playing
      3. Users with a yellow clipboard icon (a Knight badge) are moderators
      4. Users with a silver clipboard icon are temporary moderators
      5. Users with a king icon at the top of the list are premium members

    Q: How can I see someone’s profile who is in public chat?
    • From the people list:
      Click on the users name in “People” list in Rooms -> Player Card -> view profile.
    • From chat:
      Click on users name in chat -> Player Card -> view profile.

      Generally if you would like to see someones profile even when offline, click on "find friends" found at the bottom panel where your buddy avatars are shown, and simply enter "person x" username and click find, wait a few moments for the system to find that user, click on person x to view their profile.

    Q: How can I send someone a private message?

      Note: to private someone, you have to have them on your buddies list.
      1. Click on users name in “People” list in Rooms -> Player Card -> Private Chat.
      2. Click on users name in chat ->Player Card -> Private Chat.
      3. Click on users name in your buddy list -> Player Card -> Private Chat

    Q: How can I write in yellow / announce something in public chat?
      Type: “/me (space)[your announcement message]” (without quotes)

    Q: Why is some text in green and some in blue in the public chat?
      Blue text: When someone says your name
      Green text: When someone on your buddies list is chatting

    Q: How can I ignore or block an annoying user?
      1. Click on the users name in “People” list in Rooms -> Player Card -> Block.
      2. Click on users name in chat -> Player Card -> Block.

    Q: How can I report someone for being abusive in public chat?
      Click “Report Abuse” at the bottom of the people list -> select problem description from drop down list - > enter username in username field -> enter description in description field -> click submit.

    CHATTING IN GAMES:

    Q: How do I send a chat message in a game?
      Click “Game” tab -> enter your message in the provided white text writing area -> click “send” to send or enter key to send message.

    Q: How can I see someone’s profile who is in a game?
      1. Click players avatar below clock -> Player Card -> view profile
      2. Click on spectators tab -> Click on players name -> Player Card -> view profile

    Q: How do I ignore messages from spectators (and opponent) while in a game?
      Click on spectators tab -> tick “Ignore Spectators”

    Q: How do I keep spectators from joining my games and chatting in them?
      When challenging a user, tick “Private Game” game option on Challenge Invite.

    Q: How can I report someone for being abusive in a game?
      Click on Game tab -> click “Report Abuse” below chat box -> select problem description from drop down list - > enter username in username field -> enter description in description field -> click submit.

    Q: How can I send a user a private message?

      Note: to private chat with someone, the user must be added to your buddies list.

    • From bottom panel:
      Click on buddies name -> Player Card -> Private Chat
    • From Rooms:
      Click on buddies name in “People” list in Rooms -> Player Card -> Private Chat
    • From Chat:
      Click on buddies name in chat -> Player Card -> Private Chat
    • From game viewing:
      When viewing a game -> click on spectators tab -> Click on buddies name -> Player Card -> Private Chat

    Q: How can I close the private chat screen?
      Click on chat screen tab -> click “X” to close the screen.

    Q: How do I start an audio chat?

      Note: to audio chat someone, the user must be added to your buddies list.

    • From Rooms:

    BUDDIES:

    Q: Where can I see my buddies list?
      Your buddies list is found left of your personal avatar at the bottom panel of the interface.

    Q: How can I add someone to my buddies?
    • Click a potential buddies name in a room -> Player card -> ”Add to buddies list” button.
    • Click “Find friends” button (looks like a magnifying glass) found in the bottom panel just above your buddy avatars-> enter username/email -> click search -> "tick" the box near the buddy name then select “send invite” .

    Q: How can I view my buddy’s profile?
    • From the bottom panel:
      Click on buddies name -> Player Card -> view profile.
    • From Rooms:
      Click on buddies name in “People” list in Rooms -> Player Card view profile.
    • From Chat:
      Click on buddies name in chat -> Player Card -> view profile.
    • From game viewing:
      When viewing a game -> click on spectators tab -> Click on buddies name -> Player Card -> view profile.
    • From private chat:
      In private chat click on “View Profile” below buddies player card.

    Q: What must I do / what does it mean if someone adds me to their buddies list?
      A message appears bottom of screen notifying you that “username” wants to add you to their contact list.
      If you want to allow or deny them to have you on their contact list and add them to your contact list you click “Allow” to accept or “Deny” to refuse.

    Q: How can I show / hide my offline buddies?
      1. In the bottom panel of the interface.
      2. Tick the “Hide offline” check box to hide buddies and un-tick to show them.

    Q: How can I sort my buddies according to rating?
      In the bottom panel of the interface -> click on "order friends by general rating".


    Q: How can I remove a buddy?
      In the bottom panel of the interface -> Click on buddies name -> Player Card -> remove buddy.

    PAST GAMES:

    Q: Where can I see my recent past games?
      1. Click on “Game history” on your avatar in the bottom panel. / Click on your avatar -> my games

    Q: Where can I see all my past games?
      1. Click on “Game history” on your avatar in the bottom panel. / Click on your avatar -> my games.
      2. Use the navigation icons at the bottom of the screen to go to more pages of games you have played

    Q: How can I analyse my games? [premium only]
      1. Click on “Game history” on your avatar in the bottom panel. /Click on your avatar -> my games
      2. Select game you want to analyze -> the game will appear -> click on “Insight” tab to begin insight -> use play buttons [ (play button) <</></>/>>] right of the chess board to control game moves and moves you want to have insight on.

    Q: Where can I see the past games of other users?
      There is no way of viewing past games of other users

    Q: How can I share one of my past games with my friends via email?
      1. Open your past games list
      2. Click on the “share this game with your friends” an envelope like icon right of the chess board and just near the play buttons
      3. enter your/your friends email address(es) in space provided
      4. alternatively (if you have a gmail account), click “import from Email account” -> enter your gmail username and password details -> click load addresses”-> select who you want to send the game to
      5. enter a personal message (if you want)
      6. click on send
