Endgames for Beginner

ENDING ONE : - KING +PAWN vs KING

calculating the race between the pawn and king
there is simple rule of square for this
Image

When the pawn advances we draw an imaginary square that reaches the 8th rank
In this diagram the vertices a4-a8-e8-e4

[FEN "6k1/8/8/8/8/P7/8/7K "]
1. a4 Kf7 2. a5 Ke6 3. a6 Kd6 4. a7 Kc7 5. a8Q {1-0}

Re: Endgames for Beginner

When Possible the stronger side King will prevent its rival from standing in front of the pawn. If he succeeds, the pawn promotes.

[FEN "8/4k3/2K5/8/8/8/1P6/8 w"]
1.Kc7 {Preventing the black king stand in the pawn's way also b8 path is also secured } Ke6 {Since Black cannot go from 8 rank he tries to go b8 from some other root} 2. b4 Kd5 3. b5 {1-0}

Re: Endgames for Beginner

Endgame 2:= The pawn is in 6th rank

We have just seen what happens in the two simplest cases :-
1. when the king does not support the pawn,
2. when the king supports the pawn by preventing the enemy king from standing in the way.

However more interesting situation is king+pawn vs king .

Position : A
[FEN "5k2/8/5PK1/8/8/8/8/8 w "]
{In this if it is white turn then white pawn will have to take just two steps to queen} 1. f7 Ke7 2. Kg7 {1-0}

However if it is black turn to play then the things completely changed The reason is that the pawn cannot promote if both king are opposed when the pawn reaches the 7th rank.

[FEN "5k2/8/5PK1/8/8/8/8/8 b"]
{The blacks obvious move is } 1. ...Kg8 {Now the king is opposed } 2. f7+ {here the pawn moves ahead but cannot win against an accurate defense For instance 2.Kg5 Kf7! (2...Kf8 is also good). The safest way for the defender is to stay on the two squares available in front of the pawn. this fortess cannot be broken. If u have not done this before, it is worth observing and analyzing this simple sequence 3.Kf5 Kf8! (staying in front of the pawn is simplest way ) 4. Kf4 Kf7 5.Kf5 Kf8 6.Ke6 (if the defending king has always waited in front of the pawn, it is possible to get the opposition now the enemy king must retreat from that file) 6...Ke8! 7. f7 Kf8 8.Kf6 stalemate, as in the main line} 2. Kf8 3. Kf6 {game drawn by stalemate}.

Conclusion

1. The Stronger side must not push the pawn too quickly
2. The pawn should only reach the 6th rank in one of these two scenarios.
a) Its path to promotion is clear, or
b) its advance cause the kings to be opposed (but usually this only happens when the king has reached the 6th rank before the pawn )

Re: Endgames for Beginner

This endgame for beginners will not happen, afaik. I experienced this before: CC automates draw when there is a King+pawn vs. King (please correct me if I'm wrong). It would say "there's not enough mating materials".

Re: Endgames for Beginner

Maybe you experienced the time running out of the King+pawn player, in such a case the matchs ends a draw instead of the King+pawn player losing on time....

I remember that phrase and the pieces (though I'm not sure it's the exact phrase)
