Rating Calibration...

Hey guys... I wanted to ask hat how this elo rating is calculated... Lets take an example...
I am white & I have 1 queen & 2 rooks while the black has 1 queen, 2 rooks & a bishop...
So, if I resign the game now, will it be more beneficiary on my rating or by playing further & being checkmated???

material on the board is irrelevant. only the final result: win, lose or draw
