A nice chessproblem 2

Good day,

Let's see how well can people do with this new problem.

[FEN "8/p5bk/2Q1Nppp/8/3P4/2P3K1/4q1PP/8 w - - 0 38"] White to play.

It maybe not as difficult as last one but I liked this one, it is 2060 at chesstempo.

Answer + explanation when someone tryes to answer or next Sunday.

Regards Xabier.

Re: A nice chessproblem 2

Good day,

Knightattack it is not mate if

1 Ne6xBg7 1... KxNg7 2 Qc6-d7+ Kg7-f8 and now it seems a drawish position since white has infinite check and I doubt black will opose it by exchanging queens when white have a passed pawns on c and d. if white does stop checking black has infinite check too. Thus it would be a draw.

Ok let's see the winning moves.

First you need to think that there is this nice way to the king if we place our queen in 7th file since the black bishop is already in threat by our knight and his king is trapped by his own pawns.

Thus, many would think that the correct move first move would be 1 Qc6-d7 but this is not enough because it leaves our king in threat of the black queen, as black can mate white:

[FEN "8/p5bk/2Q1Nppp/8/3P4/2P3K1/4q1PP/8 w - - 0 38"]38. Qd7 (38. h3 Qe3+ 39. Kh2 h5 (39... f5 40. Qd7 Qxe6 41. Qxe6 h5 42. d5 ) 40. Qd7 Qh6 41. d5 f5 42. d6 Kg8 43. Qe8+ Kh7 44. Qf7 Kh8 45. Qxg7+ Qxg7 46. Nxg7 Kxg7 47. d7 Kf7 48. d8=Q ) (38. Nf4 Qe3+ 39. Qf3 Qe1+ 40. Kh3 a5 41. g4 ) 38... Qe3+ 39. Kh4 g5+ 40. Kh5 Qe2+ 41. g4 Qxh2#

This is the reason before putting the Q in d7 we need to get an space for our king to not get mated.

Other posibility would be first trying to defend the king with a knight move.

1 Ne6-f4

[FEN "8/p5bk/2Q1Nppp/8/3P4/2P3K1/4q1PP/8 w - - 0 38"]
38. Nf4 (38. h3 Qe3+
39. Kh2 h5 (39... f5 40. Qd7 Qxe6 41. Qxe6 h5 42. d5 ) 40. Qd7 Qh6 41. d5 f5 42. d6 Kg8 43. Qe8+ Kh7 44. Qf7 Kh8 45. Qxg7+ Qxg7 46. Nxg7 Kxg7 47. d7 Kf7 48. d8=Q ) (38. Qd7 Qe3+ 39. Kh4 g5+ 40. Kh5 Qe2+ 41. g4 Qxh2# ) 38... Qe3+ 39. Qf3 Qe1+ 40. Kh3 a5 41. g4 1/2-1/2

This defensive move will most likely get us to a draw a more complicated draw in which any mistake would mean lose to any of the sides.

Defending with the queen is not an option since we lose our knight on e6.

As I have said earlier the goal needs to be to put our queen on d7. For this we first need to protect our king.
Thus for this we make an scape to our king by 1 h3!!

Now our king has an scape when black queen tries to mate.
[FEN "8/p5bk/2Q1Nppp/8/3P4/2P3K1/4q1PP/8 w - - 0 38"]38. h3 Qe3+ 39. Kh2 h5 (39... f5 40. Qd7 Qxe6 41. Qxe6 h5 42. d5 ) 40. Qd7 Qh6 41. d5 f5 42. d6 Kg8 43. Qe8+ Kh7 44. Qf7 Kh8 45. Qxg7+ Qxg7 46. Nxg7 {[%emt 0:00:01]} Kxg7 47. d7 Kf7 48. d8=Q 1-0

2... h5 is to get a place to defend from the mate I have mentioned without the need to exchange the queen for the knight.
in move 3 is Qc6-d7 attacking for mate the only defence for black is 3... Qe3-Qh6 Now white needs to take advantage of the 2 passed pawns that has on columns c and d. Black bishop, and black queen are both blocked due to white's knight and queen in really good position.

Thus in pawn move white is in better position to win confortably.

Regards Xabier.

PS: I really like the move 1 h3!!
