Basic Guide to the Sicilian Scheveningen - Vol 1

by IM Andrew Martin

The Sicilian is Black's most popular defence to 1.e4. The Scheveningen variation, reached after the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 d6, is a flexible and fighting weapon and was a favorite of former world champion Garry Kasparov. Black retains many options with his solid pawn structure - he can repel immediate White attacks and start active counterplay at the correct moment. In this exclusive four-part ChessCube series, IM Andrew Martin will teach you the basics of this popular opening.

Volume 1 examines the Keres Attack, 6.g4. This is the most principled and dangerous system where White starts an attack without delay. Andrew will show you how to react to this system by examining several master examples.

Chapters include:

  1. General introduction to the Scheveningen
  2. Brinck Claussen - Suba (Calvia 2007)
  3. Stean - Spassky (Moscow 1975)
  4. Heimann - Sandipan (Zurich 2009)
  5. Matsenko - Timman (Budva 2009)
  6. Raul - Babula (Dresden 2008)
