Basic Guide to the Sicilian Scheveningen - Vol 2

by IM Andrew Martin

The Sicilian is Black's most popular defence to 1.e4. The Scheveningen variation, reached after the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 d6, is a flexible and fighting weapon and was a favorite of former world champion Garry Kasparov. Black retains many options with his solid pawn structure - he can repel immediate White attacks and start active counterplay at the correct moment. In this exclusive four-part ChessCube series, IM Andrew Martin will teach you the basics of this popular opening.

Volume 2 looks at the Classical system, 6.Be2 to be followed by 0-0. This is a modest but extremely common continuation. Solid White players enjoy this dangerous and well analyzed setup, against which Andrew recommends the modern system with 9...Bd7.
